We are the only organization in northern New Mexico providing free, long-term grief support to children and “parenting in grief” support to their families. Gerard’s House is your Santa Fe center for grieving kids and families. When a child or teenager experiences the death of a parent or other loved one, we are there with free grief support services and we have been since 1997. Our services are offered free to any family with children ages 3-21 who have experienced the death of a close family member or friend. Gerhard Dillner came to the United States from his native Germany in 1954 seeking wider opportunities for himself and his young family. His dreams were built on skills as a chef; skills he had acquired since the age of fourteen when he became an apprentice in Kiel, Germany. Gerhard and his wife Ruth, saw their dreams become a reality when the House of Gerhard opened its doors in 1964 and rapidly earned a reputation for outstanding German-American Cuisine.

Concurrent parenting-in-grief support groups are offered for parents and caregivers. Weekly groups for both children and parents are organized by children’s age into eight-week “units,” and when units end, families are always welcome to enroll for one or more following units. Our model creates an important safety net for bereaved families and over the years has had a lasting, positive impact on the Santa Fe community. Since 1997, we have helped more than 10,000 children and youth regain hope, stabilize physically and psychologically, and restore sustaining relationships with family and friends in the face of serious loss.

Nice enough, but the monumental suite of paintings is the reason not to miss the exhibition. Gray — the color of ashes and long a staple of Richter’s palette — is prominent. A few paintings are abundantly colored, but more often, bursts of bright or sometimes acidic color work their way through the dense gray fog.

Furnishings include a desk designed by Heusch and a plush couch from B&B Italia. So it is good to have an opportunity to see at least this single body of powerful work — six paintings, amplified by eight recent graphite drawings, on view by appointment (and with masking) through April 3 at Gagosian in Beverly Hills. Our core program service is facilitated support groups in which grief is normalized and supported through interactions with peers and attention and support from caring adult facilitators. Children and youth build trust and express their feelings through group activities that include art, writing, drama, games, free play, group sharing, and memorializing of those who have died. Shortly after we moved into a larger space and hired our first paid staff.
Several windows are incorporated into the space, including two glazed skylights. To form the 1,500-square-foot (139 square metres) addition, Heusch and his team used concrete for the walls, floor slab and ceiling. Special measures were taken to incorporating electric wiring and lighting into the concrete structure. He opted to place the office below the paved area and garden – an undertaking that began with the excavation of 80 truckloads of dirt. When Heusch purchased the property two decades ago, his aim was to create a house that respected and embraced its natural context.

The blur is also reminiscent of a transitional wipe in a movie, an editing maneuver where the time and place of one scene shifts into the different time and place of another. The “Cage” paintings are large, a bit less than 10 feet square, each larded with literally pounds of oil paint. Gritty textures expose, cover up and fuse dense layers, forming gullies and sticky heaps of pigment. He first gained wide notice for acute figurative images painted from photographs, then blurred with swipes of a dry brush. Some have seen his abstractions, which he began in the 1970s and in which he has dragged and smeared thickly layered paint using a variety of homemade squeegees, as the height (or depths) of bourgeois decadence.

The home office space is an addition to the architect's Oak Pass Residence in Beverly Hills, which was originally completed in 2006. The acceptance and healing they experienced with each other made them aware that there was no place in Santa Fe where their children’s young siblings and friends could receive similar peer support. Weekly peer bereavement support groups at Gerard’s House and in Santa Fe schools for children and youth who have experienced the death of a parent or other loved one. Sister Arlene knew of a place called the Dougy Center in Portland, Oregon that offered peer grief support for children and teens.
